The Texas Hill Country in Pipe Creek provided the perfect setting for the oasis run for the heroes. This annual 5K run is sponsored by the non profit organization the oasis for wounded warriors and benefits injured military service members, veterans and their families. Competing in this year's events was a father and son team from US Army South, Captain Jason Mercado and his 9-year old son Diego. "From my perspective as being a Soldier, often times when other Soldiers are injured theys ometimes lose their sense of self-worth and re-establishing that sense worth is a challenge. This event and other events for wounded warrior events is important and I think Diego actually helps to inspire them because he still looks up to these guys regardless if they're injured or not because he's like I have a prosthesis too and there's no reason why I shouldn't still look up to you as a Soldier or service member." Said Captain Mercado.
Diego has already competed in other events and enjoys the competition. Born with a birth defect, Diego refuses to let that define him or slow him down. He says he likes to see other handicapped people competing and feels encouraged by his family's support. "Whenever they cheer, it means i have to go and do something" Said Diego. The run for the heroes is held annually and takes place at the Mt. Zion event and retreat center in Pipe Creek.
